WENT - The simple past. Use it when the time is established and finished.
Examples : I WENT to see Linda yesterday. Peter WENT to a cafe for breakfast this morning.
GONE - Use this when the subject is still at the place mentioned. It is often an answer to a question:
Examples : Where is X? - Answer: He's GONE home, he's GONE to the races etc. The salesman has GONE to see a customer. (He's there now, or on his way.) He's GONE to the office. (You can phone him there.)
BEEN as Present perfect of TO BE. - We have BEEN here for ages. I have BEEN with the company for several years. He's BEEN with the customer for an hour.
BEEN used more as a participle of TO GO - The time is unfinished but the action is finished:
Examples: How many countries has he BEEN to this year? The salesman has BEEN to see 3 customers this week. (he's not necessarily with one now) I've been to Germany twice. (In my life, which is not finished, but I'm not necessarily in Germany now.
